Jewish Council for Youth Services
Red Leaf Village--Ingleside, Illinois

The Jewish Council for Youth Services provides programs and services for more than 13,000 children and families annually. For more than 30 years, they have offered residential and mobile camping, recreation and respite programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities.

RuckPate was engaged to design the new Red Leaf Village Dining Hall, an upscale facility to be located within Camp Henry Horner on 180 acres of rolling prairies, woodlands and Wooster Lake in Ingleside, Illinois. This project is the first step in an ongoing renovation and modernization program for JCYS’ Camp Henry Horner.

Since JCYS serves both adults and children with physical and developmental disabilities, handicapped accessibility and placement on the site were very important. The overall exterior design and building materials were also carefully chosen to be in harmony with the other buildings, taking advantage of the beautiful surrounding natural landscape.

Within the interior space, the focus is on natural lighting and bringing the outdoors inside through the use of large banks of windows on all sides of the new facility. Using the Dining Hall as a conference facility in the future will also be an option.

In their continuing efforts to develop programs and services that meet the changing needs of today’s families, while helping to improve quality of life in the community, the new JCYS Dining Hall will house modern commercial kitchen facilities able to accommodate 256 diners at one time in a “family style” atmosphere. The Dining Hall will also house a Health Center which will accommodate a nurse’s office, toilet facilities, two isolation rooms and a nurse’s apartment. This will provide 24-hour medical service for the campers

Construction documents are complete and JCYS will establish a construction start date when funding is approved.
